Calling all meat producers, suppliers, processors, and marketers! Your input is needed to help shape Oregon’s State Meat Inspection Program.
FoFF has long sought to improve access to meat processing, and local meat availability, in Oregon. Covid-19 put a spotlight on weaknesses within industrialized meat production, which contributed to further strains on meat processing bottlenecks in Oregon. As a result, the legislature passed HB 4206, a state meat inspection program, during the first Special Session this summer.
ODA is currently conducting a series of virtual meat industry workgroups (Supplier, Regulatory/Rules, and Market Development) to solicit input from various stakeholders as they put together a state meat inspection program.

While legislatively-mandating a state meat inspection program is a good first step, the reality is there are many additional challenges to overcome in order to have a thriving program in Oregon. FoFF will be advocating for long-term funding to ensure the program contains the requisite technical assistance, infrastructure improvements, and marketing needed to really make it a success.
FoFF is looking for creative ideas for public and private partnerships to help incentivize processors to take advantage of this program, so please be in touch if you have input.
